In a five-day retreat format, three individuals or couples engage in a gracious process of
reflection, self-revelation, and mutual encouragement in a supportive environment of peers.
Every Group Leadership Experience is facilitated by a trained group therapist who is familiar
with professional and church organization struggles, joys, frustrations, disappointments, and
demands.
Clergy couples need and deserve special support. With that support, a healthy balance in
marriage, family and church life can be achieved. But couples must be intentional in their efforts
or the demands of the church can produce burnout and compromise the marriage relationship.
The statistics have not been promising: 81% of pastors surveyed said that ministry leaves them
with insufficient time with their spouse and 77% said they felt pressure to have an ideal family.
Church life naturally competes with a healthy marriage where the margins for quantity and
quality time seem constantly threatened. The need to enrich clergy couples underscores the fact
that the overall health of the clergy marriage will dramatically affect the ministry as a whole and
especially the growth of a church.
In the Group Leadership Experience clergy couples will be encouraged to:
Rebalance their commitments in marriage and ministry
Understand the unique demands of the church
Reprioritize their goals and clarify their roles
Manage and focus change
Develop skills in interdependency
Anticipate and resolve conflicts biblically
Cultivate a high trust climate with ministry co-workers
Allow couples to share their stories and be understood on a deeper level in a supportive group
environment
